Product Catalog and cross-site publishing

I just got really inspired when I did some research about the SharePoint 2013 Product Catalog. It is not JUST for products, awesome!!!

If you have received this error, good luck! This one blows!

I was creating a batch of site collections and suddenly it was impossible to just visit or delete this sites. I had orphan sites.

I tried a few things from the blog here:, but in the end I tried the last option which was removing the site collection from the content database by Powershell.
Since there were quite a few site collection that got corrupted, I wrote a PowerShell script which receives a URL as parameter.

param ( [string] $siteUrl = "$(Read-Host 'Enter the site url')" )
 function Main() {
          Add-PSSnapin "Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
          $site = Get-SPSite $siteUrl
          $siteId = $site.Id
          $siteDatabase = $site.ContentDatabase
          $siteDatabase.ForceDeleteSite($siteId, $false, $false)
          Remove-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell

‘Top link bar’ not available on publishing sites

Hi all,
It has been a while since I posted something, so lets start with an easy one.

My functional guys were complaining that the first node in the top navigation or global navigation was displaying the title of the site.
So instead of changing this programmatically I looked into why one site is displaying this and another site not.(Please not that I’m not creating each site).
I noticed that this ‘problem’ does not occur when your SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure features are deactivated. Then the option Top link bar is visible again and the first node is no longer the title of the site.

So you’ll have to make a chose where you want to place your custom pages; in the SitePages- or in the Pages-library.

“Working on it” image from SharePoint 2013 gone…

During the testing of new projects in SharePoint 2013, we noticed that sometimes the loading image did not appear when we for example – tried to save a publishing page.

Feature with id already exists

You’ve probably already seen this error when you’re trying to deploy from Visual Studio 2012.
Error occurred in deployment step ‘Add Solution”: A feature with ID 15/{GUID} has already been installed in this farm. Use the force attribute to explicitly re-install the feature.

If you are like me with a package with almost 25 features, you don’t want to do this.
The following worked though.

1. Open SharePoint 2013 Management Shell
2. Add-SPSolution [location of your solution]
3. Install-SPSolution -Identity [yoursolution].wsp -GACDeployment –Force
4. Check the farm solutions in your Central Admin. The package should have been deployed without errors.

If you try to deploy now from Visual Studio it will work.
It seems that the Farm remembers that this package has to be installed with force.

Personally I find this a better solution than adding the attribute in the feature xml.
